The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, has called on the European Union (EU) to play a more positive role to cooperate with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and African Union (AU) to establish sustainable economic development in the continent.

Menfi added in his speech at the 21st summit of COMESA in Cairo on Tuesday that solving a lot of international issues should start from Africa, singling out the issue of illegal immigration that has exhausted Libya as a crossing country.

Menfi called on COMESA member states to complete regulatory and logistical structures that ensure smooth transportation of commodities within COMESA region, urging for a more comprehensive role in food production and for developing agricultural and production methods.

"Libya is supportive of development and prosperity in Africa and has taken part in the last decades in building African institutions. Libya is now going through a decisive transitional phase where Libyans democratically decide on their future. We hope COMESA helps boost economic and security stability in Libya as it will bring back to Libya its vital role in African economic initiatives." Menfi explained.
