HCS denounces arrest of member in Derna, calls for his immediate release

The High Council of State on Tuesday condemned the arrest of its member, Safwan Mohammed Al-Masouri, by a security force in Derna.

In a brief statement, the Council held the security entity—which it did not mention—accountable for Al-Masouri's safety and called for his immediate release.

The HCS emphasized that the entity has disregarded the legislative immunity of Al-Masouri, which he "derived from the effective laws of the state."

General Oil Union urges reconsideration of foreign currency tax decision

The General Oil Union has urged the Libyan Parliament to reconsider the decision made by its President, Aguila Saleh, regarding the imposition of a tax on foreign currency sales.

In a statement Sunday, the union called on members of Parliament to conduct comprehensive monitoring of the Libyan market and provide genuine oversight and tracking of banking credits, as well as monitoring the movement and arrival of goods to their destinations in the Libyan market. 

The union stressed that such a step is essential to prevent goods from becoming targets for speculators and brokers.

Libyan football team starts training camp in Morocco

The Libyan national football team left Benina International Airport in Benghazi Sunday to Morocco to start a training camp, including two friendly matches against the teams of Burkina Faso and Togo.

According to the Knights of the Mediterranean's program, they will face Burkina Faso on Friday, March 22, and then Togo on Tuesday, March 26.

These two friendly matches are part of Libya's preparations for the resumption of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

The 2024 "City Nights" festival activities, in their second edition, started on Saturday evening, under the slogan “Good Days”, in the Marcus Arielius Arch Square, in the presence of the elders and residents of the Old City, and the president and members of the organizing committee for the festival.

Libya launches Full-Day School Project for first time

The Ministry of Education and Technical Education announced on Tuesday the launch of the Full-Day School Project, a first for Libya. 

In its first phase, the project will target 12 model schools in different parts of the country.

Education Minister Musa Al-Maqrif said at a press conference that the initiative aims to provide 800 hours of instruction per year to 3,300 elementary school students.

The project will commence by targeting a sample of schools in Benghazi and Derna and later expand to include all schools in the country.

Spread of foot-and-mouth virus among animals in Libya has declined

The National Center for Animal Health announced a decline in the spread of foot-and-mouth disease among animals in the country, stressing that efforts to confront the disease are continuing to ensure its complete elimination.

The center added in a statement on Saturday that, with continued efforts to monitor and control the movement of animals, and distribute disinfectants and biosecurity materials to the regions, the spread rates have become lower than in the past.
